Who I Am

My name is Kyle Sommers.  I started Prevail Personal Fitness as a way of spreading education, philosophy, health, and fitness to people from all backgrounds in order to provide the guidance required to make lasting lifestyle improvements.

My philosophy:

My philosophy about fitness is simple.

What I believe:

I believe that for training to be effective, it needs to be personalized and holistic.

I believe that getting in shape shouldn’t be a punishment, it should be something that inspires you, and enables you to fully embrace life's opportunities. It’s an amazing and empowering lifestyle decision that anyone can make.

I believe in finding the pleasurable side of fitness; and while there will be sore muscles and difficult workouts along the way, the benefits of fitness are worth the discomfort. I have developed my training regime by working with a variety of people, and always love adapting my program to new clients.

I believe that fitness is much more than just physical. I believe that a healthy body brings forward a healthy mind.

What I do not believe:

I do not believe that every person should be doing the same workout, eating the same food, or practicing the same health habits. I believe that in order to truly push yourself, the challenges you overcome need to be just that, YOURS.

I do not believe that progress should be gauged on how you look. I believe that progress should be gauged on how you feel and perform inside and outside of the gym.

My Story:

I developed a passion for fitness after my own struggles with weight and the difficulties stemming from it.

I grew up making unhealthy choices. At 18, I weighed 260 pounds. I graduated high school barely able to run a mile or do a push up. I was fed up with being overweight. I was miserable, depressed, and knew nothing about how to change it.

What I did know, was that if I didn't eat, I'd have no choice to lose weight. I began starving myself, binge eating, then purging everything I ate. Naturally,  I lost weight, and a lot of it. Over the course of 5 months I lost over 110 pounds. As a result of these horrific behaviors, I got sick. Real sick. I went to the local doctor's office and explained that I felt tired, depressed, and weak constantly. We talked more in depth and she diagnosed me with the eating disorder Bulimia Nervosa, known most commonly simply as Bulimia.

My response was pretty much what you could expect from an 18 year old boy who just got diagnosed with an eating disorder.

Bulimia? No way.

Yes way. And if I didn't change it - it would continue damaging my body and my mind until there wasn't anything left to destroy.

So I began reading, A LOT. I picked up every book I could find about health, fitness, exercise, mental health, nutrition, eating disorders, muscle development, and any other topic I thought would help me on this confusing journey.

I began to learn how the body works, how the mind works, and how they can be a damn good partnership, if you let them.

I began exercising, learning different techniques, ideologies, and training programs. I learned through trial - and often error - how to properly train my body to look, feel, and perform my best.

Like all good things, this process did not happen over night. It's taken years of failures, modifications, and application to get here. But along the way I learned an abundant amount of information about health, fitness, and most importantly, myself.

I learned that discipline is hard.

I also learned that being unhappy with yourself and your decisions is much, much harder.

I learned that exercise and clean eating can be extremely difficult.

I also learned that it is worth it. Your mind and your body will pay dividends for your discipline. It is by far the best investment you can make.

Through that process, my passion for fitness was ignited. My goal is to share my knowledge and experience with every person I can. I want to help people make sense of health and fitness and remove the stigmas, exaggerations, lies, and distractions from the industry.
